Glass
Glass is a homogeneous, amorphous (i.e. non-crystalline) solid characterized by hardness, brittleness and transparency. The main component of glass is silicon dioxide (SiO2) and it is produced by melting silica glass sand with an additive of potassium carbonate (potash) and then cooling the melt relatively quickly, which is not enough to form a crystal lattice. Various other substances are added to lower the melting temperature, improve or modify the properties of the glass, most commonly sodium carbonate (soda) and calcium oxide (quicklime). This is how the most common soda-lime glass is created, from which plate glass and packaging glass are produced. In addition, many other types are produced with different properties, color, etc.
